This is a great book! James goes over ton of scenarios and breaks them each down in length of time in the investment. It typically shows 5, 7, and 10 year periods year of year. He covers which metrics are proven to work best and how others have worked over a period of time and then become obsolete. For example many people often looked at PE ratio, he shows that at one time it was a great indicator but lost its staying power over time. James covers the indicators which up to the date of this book have the real staying power and work out best for the investor. In the end, I found this book as a must have for any investor looking to grow their portfolio. If you're a beginner investor you should certainly read this book before investing a dime. I wish I would have!

Other books offer similar advice. Few books offer advice that's been rigorously tested against as much historical data as possible.I started with Joel Greenblat's 'Little Book That Still Beats the Stock Market', then James O'Shaughnessy's son Patrick's book 'Millennial Money'. Both do a good job warming up a novice investor to the concepts and basic guidelines that comprise the best strategies from this book, but with less expectation that the reader will have market and accounting fundamentals, or patience for many chapters of dry experiment reports.Of these books this is the most refined and extensive, and drives home an understanding of risk from the standpoint of one who doesn't buy the random walk theory.I'm confident I'll do all right investing using this information in my strategies long term.

If you are into technical trading for your investments, here are the long term results of analysis of many possible strategies. There are LOTs of numbers. Some strategies are clearly superior to others. This book gives you concrete analaysis which ones. You need to be comfortable with your math skills. I highly recommend this book ! Please ensure you KNOW your risk tolerance before investing. Understand that profits and losses are part of the game. Your task is to determine your level of variability that you can sleep with.. then choose a strategy suitable to your age, and appropriate risk tolerance.

Loved the in depth analysis on clear explanation of all the results for every possible stock strategy side by side. Definitely recommend although it’s not really a typical book you read cover to cover beacause it’s filled with graphs, tables, and the same repetitive sections every chapter. I read several chapters and then just caught the summaries with a glance through all the data. Only thing missing was the author actually explaining how a beginner investor could track some of the stock info down on our own (PE, EBITDA, ...)

This book has turned things around for me. It's just what the dr. ordered. Highly recommended! Combine the skills you attain with this book with some basic Technical Analysis with a focus on Candlestick charting and you'll be on your way.

This is a great book as you read it. However, once you are finished, try to implement the strategies. On page 584 the "Trending Value" portfolio. I do not know a screener you can buy to implement this. It consists of Value Factor Screen 2 on page 320. Try finding a system that can first calculate the EBITDA/VA. I can't. The AAII Stock Investor Pro cannot. Then apply his scoring system afterwards. The AAII did have him do a screen in the March 2019 issue. Go pull up the Excel file they had to create to get his calculations. The average person cannot even begin to understand this Excel spreadsheet. Shame on Charles Rotblut, founder of the AAII, for pushing the book in his own book--funny how O'Shaughnessy is doing seminars for the AAII. All these people are in cahoots providing services that are extremely hard to reproduce.

Excellent work to advance the understanding of value investing. Unfortunately no ready-to-use stock screen is offered, but nevertheless the book gives a great comprehensive rundown of different factors that contribute into value investing over time. Highly recommended for anybody involved with the stock market. Chances are, you will appreciate the time spent on reading this book!

I have been looking for a book to help new Baptists and non-Baptist better understand Baptist convictions. While not all Southern Baptists are identical I think this book does a great job in what it sets out to do.

The title of this book sums up exactly what it is about. I do appreciate the introduction where Hobbs states that being a Baptist means having the right to interpret the scriptures for yourself, thus this really is what one Baptist (Hobbs) believes. Though I find the stance on the wide variety of topics to be that of traditional Baptists.All that stated, this book covers a very wide range of topics that most Christians (not just Baptists) will have opinions about. The book can be read straight through or easily used as a reference as the chapters are all independent of each other, and the chapters themselves are broken down into clearly noted subsections.The reason I gave this book four stars was not because it didn't go into much depth on the various subjects. I think one of the strengths of the book is that it presents a wide variety of topics, and if the reader wants more information about a particular idea, then they can research that on their on.The four stars came from the scriptural references and how Hobbs ties them to the topics. It would be very easy for the reader to skim over the verses that are noted, but when I looked them up, I found that many were taken out of context in order to support his point of view. In my opinion, I think Hobbs' case would have been stronger by leaving out some of those references and maybe just stating that a particular view came from Protestant tradition or an overall theme of the Bible or one of its books.Anyway, this should be a must read for Baptists, and I would suspect that most Protestants would agree with a majority of the views presented. Even if you are not a Christian, but interested in what it means to be a Baptist, this book will give you a great overview, and/or starting point for further research.

This is a true classic from 1964 and is one of the best that deals with the subject. It is heavily laced with Scripture references to enable the reader to look up relevant Bible verses that support the doctrinal positions.

As an intermediate, non-jazz piano player: There is a ton of stuff in this book, quite a bit that I have not touched yet. But I love the 45 etudes at the end. There seems to be a wide range of potential proficiency covered, with some pieces requiring quite a bit of skill (as far as I can tell) to be played anywhere near the tempo demonstrated on the CD. Just about every one of the etudes is interesting to hear and practice even if played relatively slowly, and I would be happy to perform quite a number of them for anyone who would care to listen - at least if and when I can play them reasonably well.(Some of the etudes that emphasize isolated finger playing while other notes are held in the same hand can cause a fair amount of tension in my hands, so I play them sparingly if at all and sometimes modify them - reducing or eliminating some of the notes held to simply play the moving notes for their exercise while avoiding excess tension or strain.)** Note ** This book has now (Jan. 2016) changed from including a CD to including a code for online access to recordings of included music.

This book brings many different approaches to building technique which I have found very useful as a jazz pianist. The author seems to have narrowed down the multitude of piano exercises one might encounter to those which seem to be the most effective with an added jazz point of view. There are few books available which connect classical technique to a jazz concept, so this book is of great value to anyone hoping to take their technique to a higher level. No one book can solve every problem for a pianist or give them everything that they might need, but this book attempts to address quite a few important technical issues. If you have studied classical piano you are aware of the technical exercises you have to play for years. This book makes practicing technique much more fun and enjoyable as well as practical. Jazz is based on left hand chords and a right hand solo line in most cases. The exercises in this book are laid out in this type of format often so that the transition into a standard tune will be quite effective. There are also various styles in these exercises which can be applied directly to a jazz tune (or at least make it easier). I have worked through several of the author's other books (especially the first one) and found that this is a great book also.

Extremely useful book of jazz "etudes" that help boost technical skills across the board, even for non-jazz music. Many Hanon and Czerny type exercises but more up to date harmonically, and useful altered scale exercises. The first half of the book presents a good review of contemporary theory and that alone makes it worthwhile. Highly motivated, especially for those who otherwise hate the usual etudes (like me).

If you buy and study hard all J Valerio's books you will become a great jazz piano player.You can't go wrong.This book prepares you to the others.All the books are really professional level.J Valerio is an amazing piano player.You will be able to play that sound you hear on the great jazz cds ( Bill Evans,H Hancock,K Jarret,M Tyner,etc.)No doubt!The cds with the books are amazing.If you buy the books and hear the cds,certainly will be excited to start playing.All the best from Rio de Janeiro Brazil.

Clear instructions, exercises and etudes for improving technique. I always wish for recommended fingerings but they are not given.

Bought this for my boyfriend and he loves it. He has many other piano books including ones just for jazz but he told me that this book is amazing. I would say he is an amateur with the piano, and this book has helped him a lot- he loves the warm ups/practices that are inside!

Excellent book! Many of the necessary technical exercises in developing a good all around ability on the piano are present in this book. It really combines attributes from some of the all time classics like Hannon and shows ways to make it fun. Great addition to one's library.
